Indoor cycling is a form of exercise with classes focusing on endurance, strength that involves using a special stationary exercise bicycle. The instructor uses music, motivation, guided visualization and mind/body awareness coaching while leading students through a ride that best suits their fitness level and goals. Each person in the class can choose their own goals for the session. Some participants choose to maintain a moderate, aerobic intensity level, while others drive their heart rates higher in intervals of anaerobic activity. This is a major advantage of indoor cycling: each participant can control his/her level of intensity; the classes can therefore be heterogeneous. Class participants currently range in age from early 20s to late 60s.

Indoor Cycling is taught by Dr. Maria J. Alvarez, a practicing, licensed psychologist in the City of Cloverdale. Dr. Alvarez has been teaching spinning (indoor cycling) classes since 2003 in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and now Cloverdale. As a mental health practitioner, Dr. Alvarez strongly believes in the power of meditation, movement and exercise as stress reduction and prevention tools which promote mental health.

Residents of Cloverdale have very limited access to such classes without leaving the city. Therefore, Evolve was conceived by Dr. Alvarez as a cooperative space to offer affordable (low-cost, no membership required) mind-body awareness exercise classes in Cloverdale, with the intention of fostering physical and mental well-being among the community members.

In addition to her work as a psychologist and fitness advocate/instructor, Dr. Alvarez joyfully mothers bilingual/bicultural twins. In her spare time, she enjoys cycling with the Cloverdale Cycling Un-club (40 to 70 miles per ride) all over the beautiful hills of Sonoma County, completing the Asti Tour De Vine annually (she especially loves the challenge of the Rockpile Rumble), running half marathons and 10Ks, and has completed both the Santa Barbara and the Ukiah Triathlons.

Her favorite sayings:
"Failure is temporary. Giving up is forever."
"Sweat every day, & make it FUN!"
"Strong is the new skinny!"

Her favorite FREE weight-management tool:

Her most recommended anti-depressant AND anti-anxiety tools: 30 minutes DAILY of moderate cardio exercise & omega-3 supplements
